What if you fly?
Oh James M. Barrie, I think you knew of what you wrote in Peter Pan. Right now, I think we are all feeling a little dubious about flying and I don't mean the kind of flying where you get in an airplane and land somewhere delicious. I mean the type of flying where you leave the routine you have created to provide safety for you and your family during this incredibly challenging time in history and slowly make your way back out into the world. Many of us are doubting if we can fly again.
Well, I had a moment last week at the Leighton Art Centre that made me think the time to fly is coming and I want to be able to fly. My friend and colleague, Yukichi Hattori, and I were walking the land and imagining his part in 'Wandering with Wonder' when he will don the costume of an eagle and take flight for a small audience outside. His backdrop will be the beautiful Alberta foothills and the Rocky Mountains accompanied by music composed by Chris Andrew. Yukichi had not heard Chris' music yet so when we arrived at the spot where Yukichi will be dancing I played it for him. While we were listening to the music a magnificent eagle flew above us and started to soar. Neither of us spoke as we took in this incredible moment while the music played. It was like the great bird was showing us his choreography for this extraordinary music. For those of you who know me well, you will know I took this as a sign that everything is going to work out.
As we move into the next stage of this pandemic, we are all hoping that the restrictions will ease, and we can proceed safely with some clarity into doing the things we love again. For this I look to the words of Australian poet Erin Hanson who writes:
May we all take the time we need to find the freedom that is waiting for us and when the time is right may we FLY!
